20 May 2009; The President of the International Olympic Committee, Dr. Jacques Rogge, right, unveils a commemorative bronze bust of the former IOC President, Lord Killanin, in the company of Pat Hickey, left, President of the Olympic Council of Ireland, Irish Olympic legend Ronnie Delany of the Irish Olympians Association, and Redmond Morris, 2nd from right, son of Lord Killanin, at the headquarters of the Olympic Council of Ireland in Howth, Co. Dublin. Lord Killanin, who died ten years ago, was President of the Olympic Council of Ireland from 1950 until 1973.  He was elected President of the International Olympic Committee in 1972, just after the official closing of the controversial Munich Olympic Games. A proud Galway man, Lord Killanin remained as head of the IOC for eight years, presiding over the IOC during a stormy period for Olympism, in which he had to address several crises linked to international politics including Olympic Games boycotts. The Irish Olympians Association, headed by Irish Olympic legend Ronnie Delany, commissioned the bronze bust in association with the Olympic Council of Ireland to commemorate Lord Killanin’s huge input to the development of Olympic sport in Ireland and on the world stage. The sculpte was created by Paul Ferriter, one of Dublin’s best known artists. The Minister for Arts, Sport & Tourism, Mr. Martin Cullen TD was also a guest at the unveiling ceremony along with members of Lord Killanin’s family, many Olympians and the ambassadors of Britain and Ireland. 19 May 2009; Close to 2,500 walkers, joggers and runners of all abilities took part in the annual Docklands Fun Run this evening. 8 May 2009; Six legends covering six decades of GAA heroics were honoured as the Gaelic Writers’ Association announced their inaugural Hall of Fame winners at a function in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel in Dublin. Hurling icons John Doyle, Tipperary, Jimmy Barry-Murphy, Cork, and DJ Carey, Kilkenny, were joined bGaelic football greats Mick O’Dwyer, Kerry, Jimmy Keaveney, Dublin, and Peter Canavan, Tyrone, as the Hall of Fame inductees. Presentations were also made to Paddy Downey of The Irish Times, Peadar O’Brien, The Irish Press and the Irish Sun, and to Jim O’Sullivan, The Examiner, for their outstanding contrn to Irish sports journalism as GAA Correspondents. Mr. Ed Donnelly of Tipperary was honoured as the GAA PRO of the year and a special award was made to Nickey Brennan to mark his tenure as GAA President. The Gaelic Writers’ Association was revived last year and is the organisation that represents full time G journalists in print and broadcast media.
