On this All-Ireland Football Final week, we are taking a look back at some of the personal favourite pictures of our photographers from finals past. Now it’s the turn of David Maher.
One of my favourite photographs from many All-Ireland finals I have covered is of Bernard Brogan scoring his second goal against Mayo in the 2013 final.
They say to take your points and the goals will come, and Brogan scored his second goal of the final in the 54th minute into the Canal End goal.
I had set up a remote camera there, with an angle looking back to the Hogan Stand, hoping that a goal or important point would be scored and that I would capture it – with the iconic stand as the background.
When the ball dropped in around Brogan in front of the Mayo goal, I fired off my camera and remote and hoped everything came right for the shot – it wasn’t until well after the full-time whistle had went and the celebrations were over could I collect the camera and see that I got the shot.
When I looked back at the picture the next day, it reminded me of a photographer’s angle on older cameras and lenses from time past.
