Recently we showed you 100 of Sportsfile’s best pictures from the year just gone. Now we are asking the photographers to give an insight into their favourites and the story behind the pictures.
This photo is one of my favourite of 2014 and is from the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final Replay between Kilkenny and Tipperary at Croke Park.
Henry Shefflin had warmed up along the sideline in front of the Hogan Stand, and was ready to come on as a substitute in the second half.
Shefflin is one of the best hurlers of all-time so we’re are always on the look-out for him as he regularly makes very good pictures.
I focused on him while he watched Tipperary go on the attack and I got the effect I wanted. Shefflin at the bottom of the picture, framed by the four players in action, tussling for possession, the master studying the form.
Shefflin entered the fray and went on to help Kilkenny win back the Liam MacCarthy cup and win a record tenth All-Ireland SHC medal on the field on play for himself.
