Sportsfile photographer wins award at the PPAI AIB Photojournalism awards

Sportsfile photographer Pat Murphy is one of the prizewinners in the 30th Press Photographers Association of Ireland AIB Photojournalism Awards which were announced at a special gala banquet in the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Dublin, on Friday 15th February 2008. The AIB Photojournalism Awards recognise the unique contribution of Irish press photographers, whose images in the media capture the landmark stories, tragedies and triumphs of the past year.
The Judging Panel with the difficult task of selecting the winning entries was Chairperson Bride Rosney,
Director of Communications, RTE, Ian Day, Yorkshire Post, and Jon Levy, Foto 8, London.
Prizes were awarded in the categories of News, Features, Sports Action, Sports Features, People, Individual Study, The Arts, Politics and Picture Story, with a special award for Humour. The highest accolade of the evening was the "AIB Photojournalist of the Year" award, which went to Niall Carson, The Press Association of Ireland. Speaking at the gala banquet, Donal Forde, Managing Director, AIB, said, "These Awards highlight the huge level of skill and artistry that exists among Ireland's press photographers today. Our 12 month tour of the exhibition will showcase these skills to a nationwide audience, through our branch network."

The Winning Picture
Last Ditch Tackle: Dublin's Jason Sherlock gets his shot away despite the tackle of Michael McGoldrick, Derry. The competition judges said of Pat Murphy's winning image, "The viewer is almost brought in to be part of the action as play is frozen in time - just like pressing the pause button on the television."
