8 May 2009; Six legends covering six decades of GAA heroics were honoured as the Gaelic Writers’ Association announced their inaugural Hall of Fame winners at a function in the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel in Dublin. Hurling icons John Doyle, Tipperary, Jimmy Barry-Murphy, Cork, and DJ Carey, Kilkenny, were joined by Gaelic football greats Mick O’Dwyer, Kerry, Jimmy Keaveney, Dublin, and Peter Canavan, Tyrone, as the Hall of Fame inductees. Presentations were also made to Paddy Downey of The Irish Times, Peadar O’Brien, The Irish Press and the Irish Sun, and to Jim O’Sullivan, The Examiner, for their outstanding contribution to Irish sports journalism as GAA Correspondents. Mr. Ed Donnelly of Tipperary was honoured as the GAA PRO of the year and a special award was made to Nickey Brennan to mark his tenure as GAA President. The Gaelic Writers’ Association was revived last year and is the organisation that represents full time GAA journalists in print and broadcast media.
